Contributions to the Theory of Nonmonotonic Inference Systems

چکیده
In the present paper an approach to nonmonotonic reasoning is discussed which is inspired by the paradigm of abstract model theory. The aim is to analyse non-monotonic reasoning within the framework of inference operations based on model operators. This is done by using the concept of a deductive frame and its semantical counterpart, a semantical frame. These are considered as a basis for nonmonotonic model theory. Then several representation theorems are proved and compactness properties are analysed in detail. These concepts are applied to classical nonmono-tonic systems, in particular to minimal reasoning in propositional calculus and predicate calculus, and to propositional Poole systems.

Knowledge-based systems use forms of reasoning that do not satisfy the mono-tonicity property of classical logical reasoning. Therefore, several nonmonotonic logics have been developed for the investigation of theoretical foundations of knowledge-based systems. This work investigates eecient inference procedures for knowledge representation using the framework of nonmonotonic logics. Recent res...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Logics: Meaning and Utility
1 Abstract We propose a unifying framework for nonmonotonic logics, which subsumes previously published systems, and at the same time is very simple. We discuss some of the technicalities of the new general framework, illustrate briefly how some previous systems are special cases of it, and finish an informal discussion of the intuitive meaning of nonmonotonic inferences. 1 Introduction The las...
متن کاملAgainst Nonmonotonic Logic (DRAFT)
The monotonicity property of inference in conventional formal systems of logic (S ` A and S ⊆ T implies T ` A) appears to prohibit certain crucial steps in practical intuitive reasoning. For example, reasoning by default (using assertions that are assumed to hold until explicitly contradicted) appears to be impossible in monotonic systems. Many crucial steps in practical reasoning certainly req...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Reasoning and Multiple Belief Revision
The aim of the present paper is to reveal the interrelation between general patterns of nonmonotonic reasoning and multiple belief revision. For this purpose we de ne a nonmonotonic inference frame in which individual inference rules have been proposed in the literature but their combination as a system has not been investigated. It is shown that such a system is so strong that almost all the r...
متن کاملRepresentation Independence of Nonmonotonic Inference Relations
A logical concept of representation independence is developed for nonmonotonic logics , including probabilistic inference systems. The general framework then is applied to several nonmonotonic logics, particularly propo-sitional probabilistic logics. For these logics our investigation leads us to modiied inference rules with greater representation independence .
